Canada’s 2021 immigration target of 401,000 is on track
The biggest challenge faced by the Canadian government because of the pandemic was meeting the immigration target set for the year 2021. Although there were minor setbacks last year the immigration is back on track.
“According to IRCC March data 70,000 immigrants have landed in Canada in the first quarter”
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed that Canada has 70,000 new immigrants in the first quarter. The first quarter has one of the highest ratios of immigrants exceeding the expectation of 40,000 immigrants per quarter from the beginning of the pandemic. In the month of March alone 22,425 immigrants have got their permanent residency.
The pandemic had put a major dent in the immigration plan of 2019 wherein only 184,000 immigrants were granted permanent residency against the target of 341,000. This was a major concern in the government which made the ambitious ‘2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan’, which was announced by Immigration minister Marco Mendicino.
“By achieving 401,000 new immigrants this year Canada is all set to tie the record set in 1913.”
In the addition this it has plans to invite more immigrants in order to revive the Canadian economy. Due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions the Canadian government is prioritizing temporary residents get permanent residency. The IRCC is holding Express Entry draws targeting the temporary residents currently in Canada to help become permanent residents. Express Entry helps Canada to bring in economic class immigrants into the country which is nearly sixty percent of the new immigrants arriving every year. Overall the Canadian Experience Class has been a major success in the Express Entry in 2021.
“The IRCC invited 27,332 CEC candidates on February 13th to apply for permanent residence, beating the previous Express Entry draw.”
“Recently the IRCC launched six new streams for permanent residency to help 90,000 essential workers and international graduates who helped during the pandemic get permanent residence. In record time the English speaking international graduates’ stream reached its limit of 40,000 applicants in just 24 hours.”
The record-breaking Express Entry draws of the first quarter, the introduction of the six new streams, rewarding essential workers, welcoming deserving immigrants has put immigration back on track and moving towards the 401,000 target. The candidates who are living in Canada, invited from the last quarter of last year to the first quarter of this year will be receiving their permanent status by the end of this year.
