Canada rewards 90,000 migrants by giving Permanent Residency

Time and again Canada has proven how immigration is important for its growth and how immigrants have contributed immensely to its economy.

This time Canada is rewarding the warriors who helped the country in battling the deadly Coronavirus by rewarding Permanent Residency.

Canada’s minister for immigration, Marco Mendicino announced the new programs for permanent residency on April 14th. The new programs provide a gateway for temporary workers and international students to get permanent residency this year. The temporary workers employed in hospitals and long-term care homes, front lines workers, and international student graduates from Canadian educational institutions are eligible under these programs for permanent residency.

This program comes into effect from 6th May for workers with a minimum of one year of work experience in health care sectors and 95 other essential sectors listed under this category that includes store cashiers, shelf stockers, truck drivers, farm workers, food production and distribution, caregivers and graduates who have completed a post-secondary degree within the last four years.

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino said this measure is to compensate for the lack of immigration in 2020 due to travel restrictions and that this measure would help Canada reaches its desired target of inviting 400,000 immigrants this year.

“The pandemic has shone a bright light on the incredible contributions of newcomers,” he told a news conference.

“These new policies will help those with temporary status to plan their future in Canada, play a key role in our economic recovery and help us build back better,” he said.

“Your status may be temporary, but your contributions are lasting — and we want you to stay.”

From May 6, 2021, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will begin accepting applications under the following 3 streams:

  • 20,000 applications for temporary workers in health care
  • 30,000 applications for temporary workers in other selected essential occupations
  • 40,000 applications for international students who graduated from a Canadian institution

The streams said to open till November 5, 2021, or until they have reached their limit.

Canada is said to welcome more than 1.2 million new immigrants over the next three years. Also to have 401,000 new immigrants by 2021, but due to the travel restrictions, it has caused a slight delay.
